Abdulrahman Al-Sumait received his early education in Kuwait, where he passed through the country’s schools and obtained his primary, intermediate, and secondary certificates before setting out on a medical career that would span four countries across three continents.
On a government scholarship, Al-Sumait traveled to Iraq to study medicine and surgery at the University of Baghdad, graduating in July 1972. He then moved to Britain, where he obtained a Diploma in Tropical Medicine from the University of Liverpool in April 1974.
That same year he crossed the Atlantic to Canada, specializing in internal medicine and, subsequently, gastroenterology at McGill University’s Montreal General Hospital, in a period that extended from 1974 to 1978. He later returned to Britain, where, between 1979 and 1980, he conducted research on liver cancer at the University of London.
